Converting IEC 104 Power Data Acquisition to Modbus TCP for Connection to an HMI/SCADA System

Published: 2026-04-13 11:32:47

In a certain substation, smart instruments are deployed to monitor power quality. These instruments communicate using the IEC 104 protocol, while the local HMI (Human-Machine Interface) or SCADA system uses Modbus TCP. Therefore, a conversion from IEC 104 to Modbus TCP is required to meet the data acquisition and communication needs. To address this, WideIOT provides a highly reliable and efficient IoT solution.

On-site instruments are connected to WideIOT's industrial IoT gateway via serial ports. The gateway collects real-time data such as electricity consumption, voltage, current, and power, and then sends this data over Ethernet to the local HMI (PC). This allows the monitoring software on the PC to receive and process the data, enabling features such as visual monitoring, alarms, management, statistics, and analysis. As a result, the substation can improve its management capabilities and operational efficiency.

Key Features

Supports flexible networking options including 5G/4G, Wi-Fi, LoRa, and VPN.

Supports multiple network redundancy, auto-reconnect on disconnection, and multiple hardware/software watchdog timers to achieve self-healing in case of device failures.

Offers multiple interface types such as Ethernet ports, RS232, RS485, and I/O ports, enabling one-to-many data acquisition.

Supports edge computing functions such as intelligent data acquisition, data filtering, alarm calculation, change-triggered actions, formula calculation, and grouping strategies.

Built with industrial-grade protection, supports wide voltage input (6–35V DC) and an industrial wide temperature range of -20°C to 70°C.

Project Benefits

Enables collection and aggregated display of power data, allowing enterprises to understand energy usage trends and changes.

Monitors voltage, current, and power to strictly control electrical safety and help prevent accidents.

Establishes an information-based and remote management system, enabling online inspections and predictive maintenance.

Keeps comprehensive records of all data, providing support for management decisions and resource allocation.
