Enabling IEC 61850 Communication for Modbus-Based Energy Storage Devices Using a Protocol Gateway

Published: 2026-04-13 11:30:03

With the rapid development of renewable energy power plants and smart microgrids, energy storage technology has seen widespread adoption. The Battery Management Systems (BMS) used in these energy storage devices typically communicate via Modbus RTU/TCP protocols, providing key data such as battery pack voltage, current, state of charge (SOC), temperature, power output, and alarm status. This information is critical for energy management and battery safety.

However, energy management platforms are not necessarily built around Modbus RTU/TCP. Instead, they often rely on the international standard for power systems—IEC 61850—to enable unified model-based management, data subscription, and remote control. Therefore, to bridge the communication gap between Modbus-based devices and an IEC 61850 platform, a protocol conversion gateway is required. This device translates dispersed, non-standardized energy storage data into a unified, standardized format that can be seamlessly integrated into the energy management platform.

WideIOT has introduced a protocol converter that supports connectivity with various Modbus devices (e.g., instruments, BMS, inverters, sensors) and converts their data into protocols such as IEC 61850, IEC 101/103/104, MQTT, and Modbus for integration with energy management platforms. This enables remote monitoring, alarming, management, control, and data analytics, helping renewable energy and energy storage power plants achieve smart operations and management, ultimately improving efficiency and management standards.

Key Features

Data Acquisition: Collects energy data from various sources (electricity, water, gas, heat, etc.) and transmits it to energy management systems or MES.

Edge Computing: Performs edge computing on collected energy consumption data to reduce the load on cloud platforms.

Remote Control: Supports remote start/stop and parameter adjustment for various energy devices.

Rich Interface Options: Multiple network ports and serial port options available (1, 2, 6, or 10 serial ports), plus CAN ports.
