MQTT-Based IoT Data Acquisition Solution for Secondary Water Supply Pump Rooms

Published: 2026-06-18 11:37:19

A local authority has been conducting focused investigations into water supply challenges in peri-urban towns and villages served by the distribution network. In response, multiple new secondary water supply pump rooms have been installed in older residential communities and urban-rural fringe areas to maintain stable and reliable water pressure. These newly added pump rooms are now required to be centrally connected to the water supply company's smart pump room management platform for remote monitoring and maintenance management, ensuring both equipment safety and supply stability. To address this need, WideIOT offers a highly efficient and reliable IoT solution.

By deploying industrial smart gateways that connect to pump room PLC controllers, water quality analyzers, cameras, instrumentation, and other field devices, the system collects real-time data including pump status parameters, pipe network pressure, flow rate, and water quality. This data is transmitted via 4G/5G networks using the MQTT protocol to the water supply company's smart pump room management platform, enabling remote monitoring, management, alerting, control, maintenance, and work order functionalities. This significantly enhances equipment management capabilities and further safeguards the safety and stability of residential water supply.

Key Features

1. Comprehensive Data Acquisition – Collected parameters include water level, flow rate, pressure, pump VFD (variable frequency drive) and utility-frequency status, overpressure alarms, and fault alarms. All data is transmitted in real time to the secondary water supply management platform, with features such as multi-network backup and store-and-forward for data continuity.

2. Intelligent Alarm Notification – When overpressure alarms, fault alerts, fire alarms, or other critical signals are detected, the system automatically notifies management personnel at all levels via WeChat, SMS, or email. Each alert includes detailed information to facilitate rapid fault location, diagnosis, and corrective action.

3. Visualization and Remote Control – Data is connected to the management platform via protocols such as MQTT and Modbus for visual display. The system also supports remote PLC control, enabling operators to remotely turn pumps and valves on/off and start/stop equipment—significantly improving responsiveness and management efficiency.

4. Remote PLC Maintenance – When faults occur, engineers can remotely perform programming, debugging, and program upload/download operations on geographically distributed PLCs. This increases operational efficiency and management effectiveness while ensuring reliable water supply.

5. Industrial-Grade Reliability – The gateway features store-and-forward with auto-reconnection, multi-network backup, edge computing capability, low power consumption, wide temperature tolerance, and wide voltage input. Its industrial-grade design ensures long-term stable operation even in complex environments, maintaining complete and reliable data integrity.
