Online Monitoring and Early Warning System Solution for Drainage Pipe Networks

Published: 2026-06-22 11:47:39

As urbanization accelerates and extreme rainstorm events become more frequent, urban drainage pipe networks are under unprecedented operational pressure. Faced with increasingly complex underground pipeline structures and the growing demands of flood prevention and drainage, traditional manual inspection and experiencebased dispatching models have proven inadequate. Issues such as fragmented monitoring data, delayed detection of hazardous conditions, and sluggish command dissemination severely constrain the efficiency of urban emergency response, threatening urban operational safety and the safety of residents' lives and property.

When torrential rains strike, management authorities often lack realtime access to critical data—such as water levels, flow rates, and pumping station operating conditions—at key nodes of the drainage network. This results in inaccurate risk assessment of waterlogging and passive decisionmaking in flood prevention and drainage dispatching. Therefore, there is an urgent need to establish a comprehensive online monitoring and early warning system for drainage pipe networks that covers the entire chain from "source—pipe network—outlet," driving the digitalization, refinement, and intellectualization of urban flood prevention and drainage management.

To address this, WideIOT provides a comprehensive and reliable drainage pipe network monitoring solution. By deploying industrial IoT gateways at critical nodes of the drainage network, waterloggingprone points, drainage pumping stations, and stormwater detention tanks, and by connecting devices such as electronic water gauges, liquid level sensors, flow meters, rain gauges, cameras, and PLC control cabinets for pumps, the system collects multidimensional data in real time—including pipe network water levels, flow velocity, flow rate, rainfall, ponding depth, and pump operating status. This data is then transmitted to the management authority's monitoring platform via 5G/4G networks, providing reliable data support for waterlogging early warning and scientific dispatching.

Functional Capabilities

Management personnel can view, via command center dashboards or mobile terminals with GIS mapping, realtime data on the water levels of the city's drainage pipe network, ponding depths at waterloggingprone points, pumping station equipment operating status, and live video feeds from onsite cameras. This enables roundtheclock online monitoring and "singlemap" management of the urban drainage system.

The system supports customizable safety alert thresholds for water level, flow rate, rainfall, and other parameters. Once monitored data becomes abnormal or exceeds the warning line, the system immediately triggers multilevel alerts, automatically notifying management personnel via SMS, WeChat, email, and other channels—effectively shifting from reactive response to proactive early warning.

Based on realtime pipe network water level and flow data, management personnel can remotely and precisely control pump start/stop and valve opening/closing at drainage pumping stations. This enables "prelowering of pipe network water levels before rainfall and intelligent coordinated drainage during rainfall," significantly improving floodseason drainage efficiency and emergency dispatching capabilities.

The gateway is designed with industrialgrade reliability and features builtin data retransmission with storeandforward functionality. In cases of unstable or interrupted network signals, the gateway automatically stores monitoring data locally. Once network connectivity is restored, the data is automatically retransmitted, ensuring the continuity and integrity of critical floodcontrol data for postevent analysis.

Leveraging aggregated historical hydrological data and realtime rainfall information, the management platform can build waterlogging risk assessment models. These models provide robust data support for urban floodcontrol material dispatch, emergency plan formulation, and pipe network renovation planning, helping cities advance toward smarter flood prevention and drainage management.
