Smart Remote Monitoring IoT System Solution for Water Purification Plants

As society and the economy continue to develop, and people's living standards steadily rise, there is growing public concern over water pollution control. At present, China is making significant efforts to build smart cities, where green and environmentally sustainable water use has become an essential requirement. As key municipal facilities for wastewater treatment and water purification, water purification plants can greatly benefit from the adoption of PLC-based automated control technologies. These systems help improve the level of automation in water treatment, reduce operating costs, and increase production efficiency, enabling plants to better handle the increasing workload of water management.

In PLC-controlled water purification processes, automated control can be applied to equipment such as valves, coarse screens, lift pumps, grit chambers, and fine screens. Throughout the process, real-time feedback on parameters—including water level, flow rate, water quality, and temperature—is critical for overseeing purification operations. This data can be collected and monitored using the WideIOT industrial smart gateway.

By connecting PLCs to the WideIOT industrial smart gateway, the gateway performs protocol parsing and data acquisition from the PLCs. Real-time data—such as water level, flow rate, water quality, temperature, and equipment operating status—are uploaded to cloud platforms or HMI touchscreens for monitoring, display, alerting, and control, enabling timely responses to ensure safe and stable operations.

System Features

Data Acquisition: The gateway supports data collection from major PLC brands, including Siemens, Mitsubishi, Schneider, Omron, Delta, and Huichuan. It enables real-time communication via 5G, 4G, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet. The cloud platform is compatible with WideIOT Cloud, self-developed clouds, and third-party clouds such as Alibaba Cloud, Baidu Cloud, and Huawei Cloud.

Online Monitoring: Authorized personnel can view equipment on/off status, instrument readings, and water quality parameters at any time, with data presented in reports and trend charts (including water level, flow rate, temperature, nitrogen content, pH value, running/fault status, online/offline status, etc.). The system also supports configurable HMI/SCADA-style graphical interfaces to recreate the on-site process flow.

Fault Alerts: When collected parameters (e.g., water level, flow, temperature) exceed preset thresholds, or when equipment faults are detected, the system automatically sends alerts via WeChat, SMS, or email. Each alert includes details such as the alarmed device, the alarm value, and the timestamp, allowing managers to quickly locate and address issues during routine inspections.

Remote Management: The system enables remote control of equipment, such as starting/stopping devices or issuing on/off commands remotely. In the event of equipment failures, it also supports remote maintenance of PLCs, including remote programming, debugging, and remote uploading/downloading of programs, allowing for rapid troubleshooting and restoration of normal operations.

Data Analytics: By collecting, comparing, and analyzing operational data, plant managers can gain clear and accurate insights into operating efficiency, equipment runtime, effluent quality, and throughput. These analytics support data-driven decisions for operational optimization and process improvements, effectively enhancing plant performance while reducing operational costs.
