LoRa-Based Smart Irrigation IoT System Solution

Published: 2026-06-16 11:01:05

As one of the world's largest consumers of freshwater, China faces a critical need to improve the efficiency of agricultural irrigation water use. Traditional irrigation management, which relies heavily on manual labor, has significant limitations. Field staff often lack timely access to soil moisture data and pump station operating status, leading to either under-irrigation or over-irrigation. This not only reduces agricultural productivity but also results in poor operational efficiency.

To address these challenges, WideIOT offers a smart irrigation IoT system based on LoRa communication technology. By connecting soil sensors, weather sensors, pump station PLCs, and other field devices to WideIOT's LoRa terminals, the system collects real-time data on weather conditions, soil moisture, and irrigation status. This data is transmitted over the LoRa network to WideIOT's 4G gateways, and then forwarded via 4G to a cloud-based smart agriculture IoT platform. This enables remote monitoring, alerting, management, control, and data analysis capabilities.

Key Features

1. Comprehensive Field Monitoring – The system continuously tracks soil moisture, soil temperature, soil pH, electrical conductivity, air temperature, air humidity, light intensity, rainfall, wind speed, and wind direction at various points across the farmland. All data is uploaded to the platform and presented in visual dashboards, helping operators make informed decisions about irrigation needs.

2. Remote Equipment Control & Status Monitoring – Operators can monitor the operational status of irrigation equipment—including voltage, current, switch states, and flow rates—and receive instant alerts in case of faults. Through the platform's desktop or mobile interface, they can remotely start or stop pumps, solenoid valves, and other irrigation devices, eliminating the need for on-site intervention and significantly reducing labor costs.

3. Rugged & Low-Power Design – The LoRa communication devices are built to industrial standards with an IP30 protection rating and operate reliably across a wide temperature range of -20°C to 70°C. They support wide-voltage input and are designed for low power consumption, enabling years of continuous operation on battery or solar power. This greatly reduces both installation wiring and ongoing maintenance costs in demanding outdoor farmland environments.
