What Are the Functions and Applications of a PLC Serial-to-Ethernet Data Acquisition Gateway?

Published: 2026-06-01 10:35:14

In a production workshop, Omron PLCs are used to control equipment start/stop and parameter adjustments on the production line. However, each PLC has only one serial communication port, which is already connected to a local HMI for visual production management. As a result, operators cannot connect to an upper computer for program debugging. This creates a conflict between production monitoring and equipment debugging, seriously affecting work efficiency and production continuity.

To solve this problem, WideIOT deployed a PLC smart gateway that provides an all-in-one solution for serial-to-Ethernet conversion and remote PLC maintenance. The WideIOT smart gateway connects to the Omron PLC via its serial port. Through the gateway’s Ethernet port, data can be simultaneously sent to both the HMI and the upper computer (SCADA/PC), enabling production monitoring and equipment debugging at the same time. In addition, engineers can use the gateway’s remote maintenance feature to access the PLC from anywhere, allowing remote programming, debugging, and program uploads/downloads. This improves efficiency and reduces downtime.

Key Functions

1. The gateway connects to the Omron PLC via RS232/RS485, converts serial data to Ethernet TCP/IP, and simultaneously transmits the data to the local HMI and the upper computer (SCADA/PC) through its Ethernet port.

2. The gateway has a built-in multi-protocol parsing engine, allowing it to collect PLC data such as start/stop signals, operation modes, process parameters, and alarm information. It supports internet connectivity via 5G, 4G, WiFi, or Ethernet.

3. The remote maintenance feature creates an encrypted data tunnel, so engineers can perform remote PLC maintenance without having to be on site. When a fault occurs, they can respond quickly, ensuring safe and reliable equipment operation.

4. The gateway supports data buffering with resume on disconnect and automatic reconnection. If the network becomes unstable, it temporarily stores collected data locally. Once the connection is restored, it sends all the missing data to ensure complete and reliable data transmission.
