IoT Solution for Connecting IEC104 Photovoltaic Inverters to a BACnet Building Management Platform

Published: 2026-05-20 11:18:22

A factory building is equipped with an onsite photovoltaic (PV) power system that uses the IEC104 standard protocol from the power industry for data communication. However, the building's existing management platform is built on the BACnet building automation protocol. The two protocol systems are incompatible, and their data formats are not interchangeable. As a result, key PV data—such as power generation, active and reactive power, inverter operating status, fault information, and realtime power—cannot be integrated into the unified building management system. Instead, personnel must manually read and record data separately. This prevents coordinated dispatching and integration with building systems such as HVAC, lighting, power distribution, and energyconsuming equipment, leading to isolated data silos and low management efficiency.

To address this, WideIOT provides an IoT solution that converts IEC104 to BACnet. By connecting an energy data acquisition gateway to the IEC104 PV inverters, the system can collect realtime data on inverter operating status, power generation, realtime power, and more. The data is then transmitted to the building management platform via 4G or 5G wireless networks. The gateway enables IEC104 to BACnet conversion and wireless data collection, allowing building management staff to remotely monitor, alert, manage, perform statistical analysis, and analyze data from PV equipment—significantly improving work efficiency and management standards.

Key Features

Achieves protocol conversion from IEC104 to BACnet without the need for additional modifications or new modules, enabling seamless integration of the PV system into the building management platform.

By binding data variables, users can centrally view realtime PV operating conditions, power generation statistics, device online status, and fault alarms on the building platform.

Supports remote configuration and centralized management, effectively reducing the workload of onsite manual inspections, improving energy management efficiency and maintenance productivity, and ensuring equipment safety.

When abnormal data is detected, automatic notifications can be sent via WeChat, SMS, or email, facilitating rapid fault localization, diagnosis, and corrective action to prevent fault escalation and potential accidents.
