Solution for Power Modbus Device Data Collection and Reporting to an IEC61850 Management Platform

Published: 2026-05-15 11:16:46

In a logistics park, several power distribution rooms are equipped with electrical devices, including smart meters, temperature and humidity sensors, and cabinet door status sensors. These devices all communicate using the Modbus RTU protocol. The data collected from these devices—such as voltage, current, power, switch status, and equipment temperature—needs to be uploaded to a power management platform that uses the IEC61850 protocol. This enables remote monitoring and intelligent management of the power system, helping to strengthen power safety management capabilities.

To address this, WideIOT provides an industrial IoT solution based on industrial intelligent gateways. By deploying gateways inside each power distribution cabinet and connecting them to Modbus devices such as smart meters, temperature and humidity sensors, and cabinet door sensors, the solution enables real-time data collection of voltage, current, power, switch status, equipment temperature, and more. The data is then transmitted to the power management platform via 5G/4G networks, supporting remote monitoring, alerts, management, control, and data analysis.

Key Features

1. Data Collection

The gateway collects data from multiple Modbus slave devices through its RS485 interface, including analog values (voltage, current, etc.) and digital values (switch status, fault alarms, etc.). Collection rules are flexibly configurable to ensure real-time data acquisition.

2. Protocol Conversion

The collected Modbus data is converted according to the IEC61850 protocol standard and mapped into a standard data format that meets the parsing requirements of the IEC61850 management platform.

3. Networking and Data Forwarding

The gateway forwards the data to the IEC61850 management platform over 5G/4G networks, enabling platform connectivity and data queries. Both event-driven (data change) and time-driven (scheduled) reporting modes are supported.

4. Device Management

The solution supports bidirectional communication between the gateway and the management platform. The platform can send remote control commands via the IEC61850 protocol, and the gateway converts these into Modbus commands to control on-site equipment such as starting or stopping switches.

5. Reliable Operation

Designed for industrial environments (withstanding high/low temperatures, electromagnetic interference, and featuring a metal enclosure), the gateway supports 24/7 uninterrupted operation. It also offers features such as data resumption after network interruption, automatic reconnection, remote diagnostics, and firmware updates.
