Smart Upgrade Solution for Rural Wastewater Treatment Pumping Stations

Published: 2026-05-11 11:32:35

In a rural wastewater treatment project in a small town, due to the dispersed population and complex terrain, multiple integrated wastewater pumping stations were built to collect and transport villagers' domestic sewage to a central treatment plant. However, during actual operations and maintenance, these pumping stations faced serious challenges: the stations are numerous and located in remote areas. The traditional manual inspection model is not only costly and slow to respond but also fails to detect faults at the first sign of trouble, leading to sewage overflows that severely pollute the surrounding environment and trigger complaints from local residents.

Therefore, the operations and maintenance service provider urgently needs a smart system that enables remote unattended operation, automatic equipment fault alerts, and real-time status monitoring via mobile phones. This system is intended to solve the operational dilemma caused by "heavy construction, light management," while also reducing travel frequency and labor costs.

Solution

To address these pain points, WideIOT uses an industrial IoT gateway (such as the WG585 series) as the core hub to digitally upgrade traditional wastewater pumping stations. The gateway is connected to the PLC inside the pump station control cabinet via serial ports or Ethernet ports, collecting real-time data on pump start/stop status, operating frequency, current, voltage, and water level. This data is then transmitted via 5G/4G to the water utility management platform, enabling remote monitoring, alerting, management, control, maintenance, and data analysis – providing comprehensive and reliable data support for wastewater treatment operations.

Key Features

1. Remote Real-Time Monitoring and Automated Control

Maintenance personnel can view water levels, flow rates, and equipment parameters for each pumping station on a computer or mobile phone, and perform remote start/stop control without having to frequently travel to the site.

2. Multi-Dimensional Fault Warnings and Alerts

When abnormal alert data occurs, the system automatically sends alerts via WeChat, SMS, or email, allowing for rapid fault location and diagnosis, and reducing maintenance response time.

3. Maintenance Work Orders and Data Reports

The system automatically tracks equipment operating hours, alert frequency, and fault distribution, and provides an information-based maintenance management mechanism – ensuring that inspections, servicing, and maintenance tasks are carried out in an organized manner.

4. Remote PLC Maintenance (Efficient and Cost-Effective)

When a PLC fault occurs, engineers do not need to travel. They can remotely program, debug, and upload/download programs to the remote PLC via the gateway's secure channel. This greatly improves fault handling efficiency and reduces travel costs.
