The Role of Industrial Smart Gateways in IoT Systems Across Different Industries

Published: 2026-10-30 11:46:40
The widespread adoption of industrial smart gateways stems from their integrated support for diverse protocols. They act as protocol converters, translating the protocols of various PLCs, sensors, CNC machines, industrial robots, instruments, and other devices into the communication formats required by host systems or cloud platforms—thereby enabling interconnection and interoperability between different devices.
1. Wastewater Treatment
By connecting to wastewater treatment equipment PLCs, water quality analyzers, and other devices, industrial smart gateways can collect real-time water quality parameters such as dissolved oxygen, pH, and turbidity, along with operating status information from pump stations and aeration equipment. This data is transmitted via 5G/4G/Wi-Fi/Ethernet to cloud platforms or host systems, enabling real-time monitoring, SCADA visualization, and fault handling for wastewater treatment operations—safeguarding treatment effectiveness.

2. Smart Agriculture
Sensors and environmental control devices deployed in farmlands, greenhouses, and livestock farms can connect to industrial smart gateways to collect real-time data on soil moisture, light intensity, atmospheric temperature, and soil pH. This data is integrated into a remote monitoring platform for visualized monitoring, and enables remote control of irrigation, fertilization, and roller blind equipment—ensuring safe and stable agricultural production and preventing yield and quality losses caused by unexpected incidents.

3. Smart Factories
Industrial smart gateways can connect to PLCs, DCS, SCADA systems, CNC machines, industrial robots, and other equipment, collecting real-time equipment data, production data, and alarm data and integrating it into MES and ERP systems. This enables real-time monitoring of equipment and production, quality management, fault alerting, and maintenance—helping improve production efficiency and management standards while ensuring production safety and continuous optimization.

4. Energy Monitoring
Industrial smart gateways can connect to a wide range of energy scenarios—including photovoltaic, wind power, thermal power, energy storage, charging stations, and factories—collecting real-time data on voltage, current, power factor, power generation, and energy consumption. This data is presented as visualized reports or trend charts for real-time dynamic monitoring, effectively improving energy utilization efficiency and achieving energy savings and consumption reduction.
