LoRa + 4G Smart Streetlight IoT System Solution

Published: 2026-07-16 13:38:16
As cities expand and nighttime economies thrive, traditional streetlight management—which relies on manual inspections, fixed schedules, and delayed fault detection—has become increasingly inadequate, leading to energy waste and high maintenance costs. To improve urban lighting management efficiency and support energy conservation, WideIOT has developed a low-cost, easy-to-deploy smart streetlight IoT system solution based on LoRa terminals and 4G gateways.

System Architecture

In urban roads, industrial parks, scenic areas, campuses, and other lighting zones, each streetlight or pole group is equipped with a LoRa data acquisition terminal. These terminals collect real-time parameters such as switching status, voltage, current, power factor, energy consumption, and fault conditions. The data is then transmitted wirelessly via LoRa to a 4G smart gateway, which forwards it to a cloud-based smart streetlight management platform. This enables remote monitoring, intelligent dimming, fault alerts, and energy analysis across the entire city’s streetlight network, supporting fine-grained management and carbon reduction goals.

Key Features

1. Comprehensive Data Collection – Each streetlight’s operating status and electrical parameters (voltage, current, power, cumulative energy usage, etc.) are collected and uploaded to the cloud platform. Managers can view real-time operating conditions for any streetlight from a computer or mobile device, eliminating the need for manual patrols, significantly reducing labor costs, and speeding up fault detection.

2. Smart Alerting with Customizable Thresholds – The system supports flexible alarm rules for abnormal outages, voltage instability, current overload, power irregularities, and other faults. Alerts are triggered intelligently and delivered via WeChat, SMS, or email to maintenance staff, with precise fault location information. This shortens response times and reduces safety risks caused by unlit sections of road at night.

3. Data-Driven Analytics and Reporting – The cloud platform performs multi-dimensional analysis of all streetlight operation data, generating reports on energy consumption, fault frequency, lighting rate, and more. These insights help authorities optimize lamp layout, plan maintenance schedules, and uate energy-saving performance, shifting streetlight management from reactive repair to proactive maintenance.

4. Wireless Deployment with Minimal Disruption – Both LoRa and 4G are wireless technologies, eliminating the need for trenching or cabling, which greatly reduces construction complexity and costs. LoRa offers long range, low power consumption, and strong penetration capabilities, making it well-suited for outdoor road environments. It also supports massive node access and multi-center data distribution, simplifying system deployment and improving operational efficiency.
