LoRa + 4G Smart Livestock Farming IoT System Solution

Published: 2026-07-15 11:10:21
As the livestock industry continues to intensify and scale up, traditional farming management models are increasingly challenged by delayed environmental monitoring, low manual inspection efficiency, and sluggish emergency response times. To help farms transition toward intelligent, data‑driven, and precision management, WideIOT has developed a cost‑effective and highly reliable smart livestock farming IoT system based on LoRa terminals and 4G gateways.

System Architecture

LoRa data acquisition terminals are deployed in key areas across the farm—such as poultry houses, pigsties, cattle sheds, feed storage areas, and waste disposal zones—to collect real‑time data on temperature, humidity, ammonia concentration, light intensity, wind speed, drinking water flow, feed remaining levels, and equipment operating status. This data is aggregated via LoRa wireless transmission to a 4G smart gateway, which then uploads it to the cloud‑based farming management platform. The platform enables remote monitoring, intelligent alerting, equipment control, and data analytics, helping farms improve productivity and enhance animal welfare standards.

Key Features

1. Comprehensive data collection – The system captures a wide range of environmental and equipment parameters, including temperature, humidity, harmful gas concentrations, lighting, ventilation status, water consumption, and feed intake, and uploads them to the cloud platform in real time. Farm managers can remotely view the status of each production unit via computer or mobile device, replacing traditional manual patrols, reducing labor intensity, and significantly improving data accuracy and timeliness.

2. Smart alerting with instant notifications – Customizable alarm thresholds can be set for various conditions. When anomalies such as temperature or humidity deviations, excessive ammonia levels, power outages, or equipment stoppages occur, the system intelligently triggers alerts and notifies managers immediately via WeChat, SMS, or email. This enables rapid response and intervention, effectively minimizing livestock stress‑related risks and production losses.

3. Remote equipment control – The system supports remote control of PLC‑driven equipment such as fans, cooling pads, heating lamps, feeders, and water valves. By integrating environmental data with the animals' growth stage requirements, it enables automated adjustment of temperature, lighting, ventilation, and precision feeding—reducing energy consumption and feed waste while elevating the overall level of refined farm management.

4. Data analytics and decision support – The cloud platform performs multi‑dimensional statistical analysis on historical data, generating trend reports on environmental conditions, equipment performance, energy consumption, and more. These insights provide farm managers with a scientific basis for optimizing breeding processes, planning disease prevention strategies, and forecasting potential risks, shifting the management approach from reactive troubleshooting to proactive prevention.

5. Easy deployment and cost efficiency – Both LoRa and 4G are wireless transmission technologies, eliminating the need for complex cabling and large‑scale construction work. They offer long transmission range, low power consumption, and strong resistance to interference—making them well‑suited to the humid, dusty, and structurally challenging environments typical of livestock farms. The system supports flexible expansion of multiple nodes and multi‑center data distribution, enabling rapid deployment with low ongoing maintenance costs and excellent value for money.
