Integrated Solution for PLC Data Acquisition in Sewage Treatment Plants

Published: 2026-03-13 10:53:15

A sewage treatment plant is equipped with several PLC control stations, including a biochemical treatment PLC control station (located in the power distribution room), a sludge dewatering PLC control station (located in the sludge dewatering room), and a chemical dosing PLC control station (located in the chemical dosing room). These stations enable automated control of various equipment through industrial Ethernet. Operators can control related equipment via PLCs by operating buttons on the screens.

Now, there is a requirement to integrate these PLCs into the sewage plant's IoT platform to achieve remote monitoring, remote control, fault alarming, and data analysis functions for the sewage treatment process. Operators can manage operations via mobile phones or computers without frequently visiting the control stations, thereby reducing personnel costs and improving work efficiency. In response, WideIOT offers an efficient and reliable data acquisition solution.

System Architecture

Control Layer

Multiple PLC control cabinets are responsible for the automated control of biochemical treatment, sludge dewatering, chemical dosing equipment, and other processes.

Transmission Layer

WideIOT gateways collect PLC data in real-time and connect to the cloud platform via 5G/4G and other means.

Platform Layer

It provides functions such as equipment management, data visualization, remote control, fault alarming, and data analysis.

Implemented Functions

  • Visual Display of Process Status: Through configuration interfaces or 3D digital twins, the operating status and process parameters of various process links (such as biochemical tanks, dewatering machines, and chemical dosing pumps) are displayed intuitively.

  • Automated Alarming and Remote Control: Based on preset rules, an alarm mechanism is automatically triggered via WeChat, SMS, email, etc. The platform allows for remote operation of PLCs to start or stop equipment and adjust parameters.

  • Data-Driven Decision Making: Based on historical equipment data and big data models, the efficiency of sewage treatment and equipment performance can be uated, enabling the formulation of scientific and reasonable decisions for efficient operation.

  • Scalable System Integration: The gateway is compatible with PLCs, instruments, sensors, cameras, and other equipment. When new equipment is added in the future, it can be quickly integrated by simply configuring the gateway protocol, reducing system expansion costs.
