Industrial IoT Data Acquisition and Monitoring System Based on the MQTT Protocol

Published: 2026-08-21 15:40:57
The upgrade of industrial control systems is closely tied to the evolution of communication and data transmission methods. With the establishment of strategic initiatives such as "Industry 4.0" and "Made in China 2025," the move toward automated, intelligent, and information-driven industrial production has become an inevitable trend. Technologies including the Internet of Things (IoT), edge computing, and cloud computing are now widely adopted across various industrial sectors.

Today, however, many traditional enterprises remain in a state of "information silos." Individual industrial systems often operate in closed environments, making data sharing difficult. Maintenance personnel are unable to remotely access real-time operational status from equipment or production lines, resulting in challenges such as difficult maintenance procedures, high costs, and a lack of real-time situational awareness.
To address these issues, a data acquisition and monitoring system based on the MQTT protocol has been developed, incorporating protocol parsing, MQTT communication, and device networking. By connecting and collecting data from industrial equipment through WideIOT industrial IoT gateways, and enabling MQTT communication via 5G/4G/Wi-Fi/Ethernet, the system allows for the deployment of local or cloud-based servers for remote terminal access. It supports real-time viewing of equipment operating status, performance parameters, and fault information—delivering this data directly to management and maintenance personnel. This approach effectively breaks down information silos and significantly reduces expenditures on labor, materials, and financial resources, while also mitigating safety risks.

As the communication protocol underlying the industrial IoT system, MQTT facilitates information exchange among edge nodes on the factory floor, industrial IoT gateways, and cloud-based IoT platforms. It handles the transmission of multi-source, heterogeneous data—covering gateway data packaging, data transmission, cloud-side data parsing, data storage, and the parsing and forwarding of core services. Gateway data is encapsulated in JSON format, while the cloud side handles data storage, computation, and distribution. This allows users to subscribe to topic-based services and visualize data, enabling access to various data dashboards on mobile phones, computers, or large monitoring screens, thereby effectively supporting intelligent analytics.

The MQTT-based industrial IoT communication system is well-suited for scenarios involving small data payloads, high concurrent access, and low-latency tolerance. It enables rapid deployment across a wide range of industrial IoT applications—such as smart factories, smart water management, smart cities, and smart mining—effectively improving equipment management efficiency and production productivity while reducing operational and maintenance costs.
