Solution for Connecting a Food Processing Plant to the Huawei Cloud IoT Platform

A food processing plant specializing in the roasting and sale of various nuts—including sunflower seeds, peanuts, walnuts, and pistachios—operates multiple automated roasting and drying production lines in its workshop. The plant now needs to collect data from these production lines and connect it to the Huawei Cloud IoT management platform, enabling visualized monitoring and online management to improve production efficiency and management standards. To address this, WideIOT provides a highly reliable and efficient IoT solution.

System Architecture

1. Device Layer
The equipment across the various automated production lines includes washing machines, soaking tanks, mixers, roasters, cooling units, and more. Each piece of equipment is controlled automatically via its own PLC system.
2. Gateway Layer
WideIOT industrial smart gateways connect to the PLCs on the production lines, enable 4G wireless connectivity, and interface with the Huawei Cloud IoT management platform via the MQTT protocol. Data collected includes equipment status, production data, and alarm signals.
3. Platform Layer
The IoT management platform presents all collected data through visual dashboards, charts, and reports, allowing management personnel to monitor production status and equipment conditions in real time and make informed, data-driven decisions.

Key Features

The gateway establishes stable communication with on-site PLCs (such as Siemens S7-1200 and Mitsubishi FX series) via Ethernet or serial ports, and collects real-time data including equipment status (running/standby/fault/offline, along with runtime), and process parameters (roasting temperature, drum speed, soaking time, mixing ratio, cooling air pressure, etc.).

After edge computing preprocessing by the gateway, data is transmitted securely via 4G cellular networks to the Huawei Cloud IoT platform using the standard MQTT protocol with encryption. This enables the creation of visualized data dashboards, where management can get an overview of equipment status across the entire workshop, alarm conditions, production reports, and more—allowing for rapid control when anomalies occur.

The system automatically calculates key performance indicators for each production line, including Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), yield rate, and energy consumption per ton. Management can visually compare efficiency variations across different shifts and production lines, accurately pinpoint bottlenecks, and obtain quantitative evidence to support production scheduling optimization and process improvement.
