Energy Gateway in a Large Commercial Complex

Published: 2026-04-30 11:13:13

In a large commercial complex, various energy devices were deployed onsite, including a photovoltaic power generation system, battery energy storage units, electric vehicle (EV) chargers, an HVAC system, and lighting circuits. These devices came from different manufacturers and used different communication protocols (e.g., Modbus RTU, IEC104, BACnet), with no unified system for monitoring or management. The core requirements of the project were to enable data collection and visual management of all energy devices, reduce energy costs, and ensure electrical safety and stable operation of the EV chargers.

Solution

WideIOT deployed its energy gateways across the site. Using serial and Ethernet ports, the gateways connect to devices such as PV inverters, battery storage BMS, EV charger meters, HVAC PLCs, and distribution panel meters. The gateway converts heterogeneous protocols like Modbus, IEC104, and BACnet into a standardized MQTT protocol and transmits the data to a cloudbased management platform via 4G. This allows remote monitoring of device status, energy consumption data, alarm signals, and more. The gateway also supports direct control commands, improving equipment management efficiency and energy utilization.

Key Features

Protocol Integration and Data Collection

The energy gateway uses multiple ports to connect to various energy devices, parsing protocols such as Modbus RTU and IEC104. It unifies scattered operational and energy data into standard MQTT, enabling comprehensive collection of parameters from PV, storage, EV chargers, and other core equipment. Flexible configuration of data collection frequencies helps eliminate data silos and provides accurate data support for energy management.

Visualization and Analytics

The gateway sends standardized data to the cloud platform, enabling multidimensional visualization of energy consumption accessible from multiple devices. Through edge computing and data analysis, the platform generates detailed energy reports, identifies highconsumption areas, uncovers energysaving opportunities, and optimizes equipment operation strategies.

Remote Monitoring and Control

With twoway communication capabilities, the gateway enables remote monitoring and precise control of various devices. Operators can view the status of all equipment on a single screen and remotely start/stop or adjust parameters for abnormal devices, reducing onsite labor costs and ensuring stable operation of EV chargers.

Safety Alarms and Electrical Protection

The gateway can be configured with safety alert rules, collecting realtime parameters and providing early warnings for issues such as voltage abnormalities or overloads. Alerts are sent through multiple channels, and alarm logs are stored, offering comprehensive electrical safety protection for the commercial complex – suitable for unattended operation.
